This week in Grade 4 we were so excited to start working in our literature circles. All of the students put in their top three picks for novels, and we broke into smaller groups to begin reading. Our groups have been working very hard to plan their reading schedule, establish roles, and practice fluency when reading out loud. In the next few weeks, students will begin to take more and more ownership over their group discussions and learning. It's great to see how invested everyone is in this project, and I can't wait to see all of the great thoughts, ideas, and comments that come out of reading and working together.
We are in the process of transitioning from fractions to decimals, and have been taking lots of time to ensure everyone understands the concept before we move on. We have been applying our knowledge by representing decimals in different ways, converting from fractions to decimals, and playing card games to practice place value.
In Social Studies, we have begun to find images to incorporate into our final presentations. The students have been finding great maps, sketches, and photographs to share with the rest of the class.
In Science we have started experiment stations for simple machines. We are currently focusing on wheels and pulleys. The students are doing such as great job of making predictions, collaborating to solve problems, and interpreting results as they go through each experiment. We have also been discussing the forces of push and pull, and relating this to the simple machines we have already studied. Song's are a great way to reinforce concepts such as these - click here to listen to the one we've been looking at in class. Be warned - it'll be stuck in your head for days!
