It's hard to believe September is over!
We've had a great start to our year and there are many exciting projects underway!
We've been learning about Geometry in Math. We started by learning about "The Father of Geometry," Euclid. We have since learned about points, lines, angles, and shapes. The most important ideas in Grade 4 Geometry are symmetry, congruency and triangular and rectangular prisms. If you want to spend some time building other geometric solids, visit korthalsaltes.com for some very interesting nets! In art, we made "tessellations" in the style of M.C.Escher. We also did an addition and subtraction basic facts assessment (sums to twenty). We are currently doing extra practice in this area as we strive for the "standard of excellence" level. Ask your child which area they need to work on. If he/she doesn't remember, I can look it up.
In Social Studies, our big focus has been on Stampede School! We're learning about the Stories and Histories of Alberta by trying to find answers to the question, "What can the past teach us about what it means to be Albertans?" We started by looking at the connections students have to Stampede, personally, and from there we created a list of "categories" we want to learn more about. Students are doing research on one of the following topics: Stampede Parade, First Nations, Stampede Music, Stampede Park (the place), Cows/Bulls, Horses, Cowboy/ Cowgirl Culture, The Wild West, Competitive Events at the Stampede and Agriculture in Alberta. So far, students have been researching some of the people (both from the past as well as the present) who relate to their topic. Next, we will be using what we've learned to create a timeline for the Stampede.
Another highlight was our Guest Speaker, Mark Sutherland. The kids loved hearing about Chuck Wagon Racing!
In Science, We've been learning about Plant Growth and Changes. We've been learning about the parts of the plant. Students have dissected a seed, compared fibrous roots to tap roots, observed celery stalks (stems) and leaves turn blue, and experimented with chlorophyll chromatography (leaves). To enhance our learning, we watched short videos about each part of the plant. We also made leaf prints in art!
Stay tuned for more updates!
