I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable time away. We are just getting back from Spring Break, and things are already in full swing. It's been a busy few weeks in Grade 4!
In Math, we have stared a price comparison project to practice addition and subtraction of decimals. It's been a great opportunity for students to make a real world connection to subject matter in math. Students have been searching through grocery store flyers, pricing out grocery lists, and comparing prices between different stores. It's been exciting to see everyone working collaboratively to learn and solve problems throughout the process.
Our literature circle unit will be wrapping up within the next few weeks, and we have started discussing our final project. The students are SO excited to create board games based on their novels to share with the rest of the class. These games will incorporate the setting, characters, and main plot points of their literature circles novel. Once these are completed, we will have a celebration of learning day where students can try out the games and learn about each others books!
We are continuing to work on our Social Studies projects. This week our focus has been on organizing our research notes and pulling out important points that need to be included in each presentation.
In Science, we wrapped up our unit on Simple Machines. We have reviewed our understanding through a game of simple machine charades, discussed Rube Goldberg machines, and have begin to apply our understanding through a "Simple Machine Brains" art project. The ideas that are being generated for this project are super creative. I can't wait to see the final product!
And last but not least, we have decided on a focus for our volunteerism Health project. The students will be volunteering their time and talent to teach Grade 1 students to read. We will be going through a great training program provided by Calgary Reads, and will be paired with a buddy next week. This is an amazing opportunity to help out within the school and to practice/teach all of the fluency and comprehension skills we have been developing through literacy circles in LA.
