The students have been working hard this week to get everything in order before their big break! In LA, we finished our assigned reading for each book, completed our jobs on time, and were left with lots of valuable time for discussion and questions. It's great to see the students collaborating within their groups. So many good thoughts and questions have come out of each groups discussions already, and we are only on Week 2! For the next few weeks, we will start each Monday by studying a certain skill that good readers have. This week, we looked at making inferences. The students did a great job finding clues left by the authors in their texts and using this to make educated guesses about what the information may have meant.
In Social Studies, we discussed the difference between primary and secondary sources and continued our hunt for pictures, photographs and maps that will enhance each groups presentation. In Health, we are beginning to look at volunteerism. The students watched the video below about how to change the world, and we brainstormed ways our class can do just that by volunteering our time and talent. We will start to work on implementing some of these ideas when we return from Spring Break

We had a great experience in Math this week! The Grade 7 students at Rosedale are also working on fractions, so we teamed up to discuss our learning. Since one of the best ways to learn is through teaching, the Grade 4's got to step into mine and Ms. Popis' shoes and teach the Grade 7's how to complete their "Fraction of the Day" exercise. We are also starting to add and subtract decimals. The students have been practicing estimation and rounding, and relating this to our work in fractions.
Last but not least, we are wrapping up drive systems in our Simple Machines unit. The Kindergartens were kind enough to lend us their gear building set, so we were able to experience some valuable hands-on learning. The students were given building challenges and asked to create gear systems that accomplished a certain task. After the challenges, we were able to view each others work and discuss the movement of the gears in their systems. We also looked at where you can find drive systems in our everyday lives, and have come up with a long list from bicycles to steamrollers to pencil sharpeners!
That's it for this week! Have a relaxing and fun-filled break. We can't wait to see everyone back in the classroom on March 29th.
